2D/1N: Hiking the Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing

ATLANTIC FOREST, Rio de Janeiro

The route from Petrópolis to Teresópolis is one of the main treks in Brazil, 35 km long, and can be completed in three days walk. We will be walking in altitudes between 1500 and 2000 meters, crossing the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. From west to east, passing by beautiful sights such as the Chapadão, castelo do Iguaçu, the Antas Valley and the Pedra do Sino, the summit of the Orgãos range, 2263 meters high on our way, we´ll find natural shelters to overnight, and places to enjoy the great views of the whole range and from where we can see the Três Picos of Friburgo, the Guanabara Bay and If the sky is clean, the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro. The best time to go is during the dry season (July-September).

Itinerary

Day 1

Departure from Rio; 1 and a half hour to the Serra dos Orgaos National Park. Begin a 5 hours hike to the top of the pedra do Sino peak (moderate trail - "Switch-Back"). Upon arrival, set up accommodation in a small camp lodge in the forest (Shelter 4). Have dinner and Sleep overnight.

Day 2

After resting the whole night and having a rich breakfast, we will go on with our trek for the whole day. 6 hours hike from Pedra do Sino to Açu (Hard trail - irregular terrain up-and-down) - Enjoy the view of Rio de Janeiro at 2100mts (6890ft.). Take a break. Again, continue with a 3 hours hike down the hill from Açu peak to Petropolis city (moderate trail). Drive back to Rio and return to your hotel accommodation.
